Economic incentives for sustainable management: a small optimal control model for tropical forestry

چکیده

The main purpose of this article is to evaluate different policy options for promoting low-impact logging through the use of economic incentives. To do this we construct a small optimal control theory model within an integrated framework including both the biological and the economic implications of timber extraction. The approach uses detailed stock, yield and cost data from Ghana. A numerical solution is reached by the use of multi-period non-linear optimisation. Direct subsidies to low-impact logging activities through area-dependent subsidies is found to be far more efficient than subsidising prices of tropical timber. The model takes a novel approach in combining growth and stock in a tropical forest area with the cost and damage connected with timber extraction. It allows us to analyse the interactions between stock, growth, timber extraction, logging damage and operating costs in an integrated manner. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Stochastic Dynamic Programming with Markov Chains for Optimal Sustainable Control of the Forest Sector with Continuous Cover Forestry

We present a stochastic dynamic programming approach with Markov chains for optimal control of the forest sector. The forest is managed via continuous cover forestry and the complete system is sustainable. Forest industry production, logistic solutions and harvest levels are optimized based on the sequentially revealed states of the markets. Adaptive full system optimization is necessary for co...

‘Economic Stakeholder Analysis’ for Participatory Forest Management

Fo re st ry B rie fin g N um be r 4, M ay 2 00 3 Introduction A major reason for the high failure rate of rural development forestry projects is the weak economic incentives for local forest users and other stakeholders to participate in sustainable forest management (SFM). In view of the high dependency of the rural poor on forests for their livelihoods, this has serious poverty implications. ...

Global economic trade-offs between wild nature and tropical agriculture

Global demands for agricultural and forestry products provide economic incentives for deforestation across the tropics. Much of this deforestation occurs with a lack of information on the spatial distribution of benefits and costs of deforestation. To inform global sustainable land-use policies, we combine geographic information systems (GIS) with a meta-analysis of ecosystem services (ES) stud...

Modelling Self-Organization Processes in Socio- Economic and Ecological Systems for Supporting the Adaptive Management of Forests

Managing the numerous and interrelated processes between man and nature in order to use renewable resources in a sustainable way is confronted with conflicting objectives, external effects, complex interdependencies, uncertainty and other features that make it nearly impossible to come to unambiguous optimal decisions. Self-organization in socio-economic and ecological systems the process of st...
